Since the 1980s, FLANO has taken his photography into extreme weather and under some of the darkest skies in North America. From chasing tornadoes across the Great Plains to working monsoon lightning in the Southwest, and capturing the Milky Way, lunar eclipses, and total and annular solar eclipses, his work is defined by an ability to read conditions before they reveal themselves. His imagery is built on preparation, timing, and understanding how the natural world behaves.
Through Focused Adventures, FLANO brings photographers into real-world environments where conditions are dynamic and outcomes are never guaranteed. His workshops move beyond theory, teaching participants how to interpret weather, anticipate change, and position themselves with purpose, so they leave not just with compelling images, but with the ability to create them independently. He enjoys helping photographers discover what’s possible. When everything finally clicks and they realize they can do it for themselves, that’s what makes all the experience worth sharing.
That ability to teach under pressure is grounded in experience. In the United States Air Force, FLANO served as an instructor in high-stakes environments, training others to operate effectively under pressure. He later carried that same approach into his work with American Airlines, guiding professionals through complex, real-time decision making.
Today, his workshops span extreme weather, night sky, and immersive landscape experiences, including future-focused adventures such as fall color expeditions, Antarctic expeditions, and other dynamic photographic environments. Because the difference between witnessing a moment and capturing it is rarely luck.
Learn to chase the moments most photographers miss entirely, and understand what to look for before they happen.
